The Maraca
Step OneStart out with a basic Hoot Can, as described in Lesson Two: the Hoot. Thoroughly rinse out the Hoot Can with hot tap water. Fill with hot water and allow it to sit for a few minutes. The idea is to remove the excess soda syrup from the inside of the can, so that the rattles inside will not stick. While the can is sitting, gather as many pop tabs as you can find. Remove them from their cans. If you like, you can use the removal method described in steps one and two of Lesson Two. Or, if you don't plan on using the other cans for anything, you can just jerk them off of the rivet in whatever method you find easiest. Get at least a dozen. More is better. After you gather enough tabs, dump out the can and shake out as much excess moisture as possible. Put all of the pull tabs into the can.

Step TwoPlace the palm of your hand over the top of the can and grip it tightly. Play it with a sharp snap of the wrist. You can adjust the sound somewhat by cupping the palm of your hand more or less over the top of the can. Or, for a more open sound, just hold the can like you would hold it to drink from it, and wobble it sharply from the wrist, side to side. And, unless you completely went hog wild with the tabs, you can still use it as a Hoot Can.
