Fish

A while back, I spent the morning at Aquarium World, a well equipped fish store. For several hours, I wandered around taking pictures of fish. Good a way to kill a morning as any, I guess.

Unfortunately, very few of them turned out due to the limitations in lighting and equipment. I was forced to take my photos without a flash, both because I didn't want to scare the fish and because I wanted to avoid glare from the glass.

So, as expected, most of the photos came out extremely blurred. The shutter speed had to be set very low to get an acceptable image, and fish move surprisingly fast when they're startled. And my camera seemed to startle them every time. I suppose, to my subjects, the camera was a giant silver fish with flesh-colored fins and a single beady glass eye staring straight at them with unknown intent. Still, in spite of such difficulties, some interesting pictures came out. Most of them were interesting blurs of color on a still background. But still. I won't even try to identify the species here.

The goldfish seemed to have just the opposite reaction. They weren't at all camera shy. If anything, they seemed surprised by the whole affair.

"Holy crap! What the heck is that?!?"

Getting a closer look.

"I am not amused."

Aquarium World also has a large koi pond stocked with several hundred koi of varying sizes and colorations. They're a lot of fun. They've learned to associate approaching humans with food. So every time someone stands next to the pool, they're greeted by several dozen hungry koi just under the surface. The patterns of light in the water are also worth looking at.
