The Psychic Connection

(AKA the Obligatory Links List)

These things make my page look like it has more content. That's one of those clever web tricks we experienced cyber types use. You should write a book. This is the ever expanding list of things I think are cool: Vaguely paranormal looking optic fiber effect.

Miscellaneous Humor

Here is some random fun stuff I found while looking at that there Interweb thingy.
  • This page makes extensive use of Mind Reading Markup Language (MRML) as part of my ongoing plot to take over the world. So far, I have managed to bring a small apartment and a cubicle under my iron rule, but I have confidence that this is only the beginning.
  • Pickle's Page o' Stuff. Just go look at it, huh?
  • You know those annoying little 404 messages you get when you botch a URL? Usually, they're pretty bland and annoying. But, it's always worth sparing them a glance. Sometimes, you'll run across something unexpected. Take a look at Area 404 and you'll see what I mean.
  • Grumble Magazine. It stays crunchy in milk!
  • Airtoons explains what is really going on in the instructional cartoons in airline safety pamphlets.
  • The Deadly Follies of Stick Figure Warning Man is a behind the scenes look at the warning sign industry.

My Favorite Webcomics

Here are some comics I never miss. Most of them have archives, so be sure and start form the beginning if you have a few hours to kill.
  • Sluggy Freelance is an absolute must-read. It's got ray guns, comedy, talking switchblade-wielding bunny rabbits, drama... This comic's got it all!
  • User Friendly is the ongoing story of a small Internet service provider. Punchlines as fresh as today's headlines (at Slashdot).
  • Real Life, which is the story of a real life slacker type person. Many inside computer gaming references, but a lot of other great stuff as well.
  • Scary Go Round, a wacky British comic.
  • Achewood, a comic about talking cats with drinking problems. There's also robots. And the occasional otter.
  • Questionable Content. I don't know how this guy manages to do this day after day, week after week. Good stuff!
  • XKCD, a webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language.

Other Stuff

Games, widgets, and other random bells and whistles on the net.
  • Hero Machine is a Flash based program designed to let people with no artistic talent create character art for pen-and-paper RPGs. Or, just make random comic book characters for fun.
  • Flatland, a book written by Edwin A. Abbot in 1884. An account of a two dimensional being trying to deal with the complexities of a three dimensional world. A handy reference for those of you interested in the Superstring theory (TEN dimensions?!?), or just a good way to kill an afternoon.
  • Champions, from Hero Games. Lets me pretend I'm a Superhero!. Okay, I'm sure there's something Freudian in that, but I refuse to think about it...
  • Star Control Time Warp is a fan remake of Star Control, the classic game of head-to-head space fighter combat. It's still in the beta stages (meaning it crashes a lot), but it's free, and really amazing. Basically, a group fans decided that Star Control 3 (the third and last in the series) was so unforgivably awful that they would band together to re-create it the way it should be.
  • Do yourself a favor and spend some time at Orisinal.com. Ferry Halim makes some of the most imaginative and beautifully implemented Flash games on the Web. My current favorites are Pocketful of Stars (quick, neat dream logic), Among the Clouds (relaxing, nice musical score), Cats (maddening, great music), and Summer Walk (nice music, starts easy, slowly gets very hard). But all are worth playing at least a few times.
  • I check out several webfilters on a daily basis. These include Metafilter, Memepool, GeekPress, Boing Boing, and LinkSwarm. Fair warning: occasionally there are some somewhat naughty (as PG-13, sometimes straying into R) things posted on some of these (especially the last one). But they're listed by subject and/or synopsis, so you can usually guess what an entry is generally about before you open the links.
  • Then there's Cruel Site of the Day, a webfilter specializing in "bitterness, sarcasm, disappointment, despair, perversion, anger and bad taste" on the Web. I was featured on October 19, 2002, for the White Trash Lava Lamp. Wow. I'm famous! (If that was your Warhol time, demand a refund!) CSotD is often NSFW. And it's always sarcastic and cynical. But it's usually good for an evil chuckle here and there.

Useful Links

Just that. Useful information.
  • Most of the javascripts on this page were kiped from the Javascript Source.
  • There are all sorts of rumors floating around the 'Net. Most of them aren't true. And with the anonymity of the 'Net, it's easier than ever to lie, cheat, and steal. Before you forward on that e-mail rumor or too-good-to-be-true offer on to another twenty unsuspecting folks, check them out on these sites:
  • RefDesk.com, an all-in-one reference tool for just about everything.
  • I use Dictionary.com on a daily basis.
  • And be sure to check out the audio pronounciation option at Mirriam-Webster Online. Making your computer say dirty words is a great way to pass the time.
